  • Vitamin B Shots – Do they Live up to the Hype?
Every so often, it seems that a new miracle treatment that promises cures for a host of conditions emerges. We're currently in the midst of one such period in the history of modern health care, but the miracle treatment causing a buzz isn't exactly new. The current cure-all that people are recommending to friends and websites are touting is the vitamin B injection. These shots contain a dose of vitamin B12, a nutrient first discovered in 1971.

Supplementation with B12 is nothing new, but recently, claims have emerged that vitamin B12 can help with many different chronic health problems. In the body, vitamin B12 is vital for performing specific tasks, including manufacturing the red blood cells that carry oxygen to the body and producing nerves and genetic material. There's no question that we need B12 to survive…But can adding extra to your body with injections give you any benefits?

To find out, I looked into some of the conditions that vitamin B12 injections are used to treat.

    - Vitamin B12 Deficiency - Deficiency of vitamin B12 can produce many symptoms, such as fatigue and shortness of breath, and lead to serious health problems, including a life-threatening form of anemia. For a person with a true vitamin B12 deficiency, vitamin B shots aren't just helpful; they're often necessary. Determining whether or not you may have a vitamin B12 deficiency is rather simple. Your doctor just needs to order some routine blood work.

    - Obesity - B12 injections are being administered at some weight loss clinics that claim the shots somehow boost a person's metabolism. While it's true that sometimes people are given vitamin B shots after weight loss surgery, this isn't to help them shed pounds; it's because many people who have had gastric bypasses don't get enough of the nutrient and need supplementation to avoid a deficiency. The only true path to weight loss is a healthy diet and burning more calories than you take in. While there are supplements that are proven to assist with weight loss, vitamin B12 is not one of them.

    - Depression and Chronic Fatigue - Since B12 injections can bring people who are deficient of the vitamin increased energy, some people now claim that the shots can help with other conditions that are marked by weakness and fatigue. There has so far been no conclusive study that vitamin B12 is an effective treatment for depression or any other mental illness or for chronic fatigue syndrome.

    - Cardiovascular disease - In the body, vitamin B12 does assist with the breakdown of some toxins that are known to harm the cardiovascular system, including homocysteine. Because of this, some people now think that vitamin B shots help to reduce the risk of heart disease, heart attack and even stroke; however, at this time, there is no medical evidence that suggests that increasing the amount of vitamin B in the body (over and above what it needs) serves any protective function for the heart or the blood vessels.

In short, the only medical conditions that vitamin B12 injections are sure to help are vitamin B12 deficiency and complications that arise due to the deficiency. Although vitamin B12 shots are unlikely to hurt you if you don't need them, it's probably not worth the time or money to undergo injections that are potentially not even providing your body with any benefits. If you think you may be lacking in B12 or if you are worried about another health care problem that B12 isn't proven to treat, talk to your doctor about your concerns.

Though this is what our research has concluded; I have to additionally say that I do have a few friends and colleagues who do in fact sing the praises of the B12 injections simply for energy and weight loss.  But again, there seems to be no clinical evidence to support that theory.

  • Top 10 Tips for Pampering Delicate Skin
Studies indicate that around 44 percent of people suffer from some form of skin sensitivity. Hypersensitivity can manifest itself in many forms, causing symptoms like rashes, redness, stinging and inflammation. In some people, sensitivity occurs due to triggers, such as ingredients in skin care products, while others may notice signs of sensitivity in response to environmental conditions or exposure to the sun. Whether you have sensitivity issues occasionally or are constantly battling hypersensitivity, your complexion requires extra pampering.

To help you reduce the unpleasant symptoms of sensitive skin, keep the following 10 tips in mind.

    1. Be a smart shopper. When you’re developing a skin care routine for delicate skin, it’s important that you choose products wisely and do your best to avoid potential irritants. This can be achieved by choosing cosmeceutical formulas that are hypoallergenic or products that are natural and organic.

    2. Give it a rest. Oxygen is vital to skin healing and rejuvenation, so helping your skin have as much exposure to the air as possible is important to aiding in the recovery of irritated tissue. When you have flare-ups of sensitivity, use cosmetics sparingly, and on a consistent basis, try to take at least one day completely off of makeup to give your skin a chance to breathe.

    3. Don’t forget to cleanse. When your skin is very sensitive, it’s normal to be wary of using skin care products, particularly cleansers, which can sometimes dry out your skin; however, sensitive skin requires regular cleansing to remove impurities that can trigger reactions. Look for cleansers with natural ingredients, such as those in the ARCONA skin care collection. These formulas are often gentler than those with chemical-based surfactants.

    4. Keep it clear. Sensitivity and acne often go hand in hand, and unfortunately, many acne treatments contain harsh ingredients that further irritate delicate complexions. When you have breakouts, use a naturally based spot treatment and other natural acne solutions like the ones in the ARCONA range to speed up healing time without exacerbating sensitivity.

    5. Treat your skin to a drink. When you have sensitive skin, proper hydration is important for preventing dryness, peeling and flaking. A product like ARCONA Magic White Ice that replenishes lost moisture with natural ingredients can make a big difference in the health of delicate skin. The product’s nutrient-rich extracts also provide protection against environmental impurities, and a larger ARCONA Magic White Ice Jumbo Size version is available, making it convenient to use the product daily.

    6. Fight back against aging. Delicate skin is often more prone to damage by free radicals, the particles in the environment that contribute to the breakdown of collagen. No matter what your age, you should begin replenishing your skin’s collagen supply with the use of gentle, natural formulas like Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Collagen Booster. Adopting an anti-aging skin care regimen early in life can help to slow down the aging process, and for older women, will help to minimize the appearance of existing fine lines.

    7. Address the red. When you see symptoms of sensitivity, especially redness, you should treat your skin with a formula designed to soothe irritation. Ole Henriksen makes a cooling, natural oil that contains aloe vera and chamomile, two ingredients that effectively fight inflammation.

    8. Protect yourself. If you have sensitive skin, it’s vital that you use a sunscreen on a daily basis to shield your complexion from the effects of UV radiation. For everyday wear, cosmetics or a moisturizer that contains zinc oxide or titanium oxide is probably sufficient sun protection, but when you’ll be outdoors for extended periods of time, be sure to apply a hypoallergenic waterproof sunscreen.

    9. Keep a skin journal. By tracking when you experience hypersensitivity reactions, you may be able to identify triggers that you should avoid in the future. Purchase a notebook or a pretty journal and record the day and time that symptoms appear. Describe what you experienced and write down what skin care products you used, foods you ate and activities you performed. Also, make note of any cleaning products or other chemicals that you handled during the day. Periodically review your journal and share it with your doctor for help identifying patterns.

    10. Indulge occasionally. Sensitive skin can greatly benefit from professional facials, so set some time and money aside to treat yourself to one at least once every few months.

Helping sensitive skin recover takes time. Choosing natural and organic personal care products and following the other tips that I’ve mentioned can make a big difference in the health of your complexion, but don’t expect to see results over night. With consistent pampering and some patience, you will gradually begin to notice an improvement in the look and feel of your delicate skin.
  • Maximizing the Maxi Skirt and Dress
The maxi is one of this season's hottest looks and is a flattering style for many different types of figures. One of the greatest things about maxi skirts and dresses is that they're very versatile and can be styled multiple ways, giving you many different outfits with just one new fashionable piece and items that you already have in your closet.

To maximize the potential of your new maxi, keep the following ideas in mind.

    - Modify the middle. Belts instantly change the look of both maxi dresses and skirts and will give you the look of a completely new outfit in seconds. Experiment by pairing belts of different colors, thicknesses and materials with your maxi.

    - Suit up. A blazer worn over top a maxi dress or with a maxi skirt paired with a tee or blouse can give you a brand new look. Try boldly patterned jackets with solids or small prints and solids with wilder designs. The blazer-and-maxi look doesn't just have to be dressy. A fitted denim blazer can look hip and fashion-forward when worn over top of your favorite maxi style.

    - Tie one on. A strapless maxi dress or one with a simple scoop neckline can be reinvented with a pretty patterned scarf. You can tie it in a neat knot around your neck for a polished look or let it hang loosely for a laid-back summer look.

    - Pin it up. You can give your maxi dress or skirt a quick alter compliments of some safety pins. Gather the front into some small bunches of fabric and secure it with the pins, being careful to conceal them on the inside. Pair your dress or skirt with some super cute summer sandals that you want to show off and then hit the town.

    - Layer, layer, layer. Another great way to style a maxi dress is by wearing a pretty blouse, stylish tank or hot halter over top. This works best with a maxi topped with spaghetti straps or a strapless bodice.

Whether you belt it, cover it or dress it up to go out on the town, your maxi dress or skirt is sure to become one of your favorite pieces in your wardrobe. Get creative and have fun inventing new ways to wear it; as always with fashion, there's no wrong way to style a maxi, so long as your look flatters your body and makes you feel fabulous.

  • Five Ways to Beautify your Hair
It’s normal for your hair to occasionally give you trouble due to recent chemical treatments, a trip to the pool or changes in humidity; however, when your bad hair days outnumber the good ones, it’s a sign that there’s an underlying issue with your hair.  While every woman’s hair is different, all hair has a few of the same basic needs. By ensuring that your hair has all of the essential nutrients that it requires to grow healthy and strong, you can greatly improve the appearance of your hair. Having nourished, gorgeous tresses is easier than you might think; in fact, you can get great results by making just five simple changes to your hair care routine.

    1. Get more omega 3s. Fatty acids, particularly omega 3s are an important nutrient in the structure of the hair strand. As much as 3 percent of each hair is composed of the fatty acid, and your body can’t manufacture it on its own, meaning that your entire supply must come from foods and supplementation. Increasing the amount of fresh fish, such as salmon, that you eat can make some difference, but for most of us, topical application of formulas that contain omega 3 fatty acids are necessary to truly get results. Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Shampoo is an easy way to treat your hair to omega 3 fatty acids, as it contains a caviar derivative that is rich in the key nutrient. The shampoo was clinically shown to restore shine and manageability in 100 percent of users’ locks during clinical testing.

    2. Keep things moist.
A healthy hair strand is partially made up of water, and those vital droplets are constantly under the threat of evaporation due to the environment and the use of tools like hair dryers. This makes it important that you replenish lost moisture on a regular basis with a high quality conditioner like Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Conditioner. This formula also gives you the added benefit of a second dose of caviar, and Alterna sells it in an affordable two-pack with the shampoo in a product called the Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Duo.

    3. Style right. Choosing shampoos and conditioners with beneficial ingredients will get you on the path toward healthier hair, but it won’t get you there on its own. To beautify your hair, you must be cautious about how you style. Avoid brushing wet hair and use a wide-toothed comb to minimize snags and breakage. When you utilize a thermal styling tool like a flat iron or the blow dryer, apply a thermal protectant to minimize the amount of evaporation that occurs. Follow your hairstylist’s recommendation for how frequently you should color or perm your hair and be willing to take a break from chemical treatments if your locks become stressed.

    4. Address seasonal and hormonal changes.
Believe it or not, your hair’s thickness changes over the course of the year in response to the seasons. This doesn’t mean that you’re in danger of going bald at some point during the year, but it is likely that your hair may seem limper and devoid of body until it regains its thickness. Hormonal changes caused by pregnancy and menopause can also affect your hair’s volume. Typically, it’s not necessary to use prescription products to handle this type of temporary thinning; fine quality, over-the-counter hair regrowth and thickening treatments can typically help you overcome your symptoms until hair growth returns to normal. One of my favorite hair and scalp treatments for temporary thinning is Phyto Phytocyane Revitalizing Lotion. To deliver results, Phyto combines natural botanicals that work to increase the amount of circulation to the scalp, encouraging hair regrowth to help your locks rebound from thinning.

    5. Fight stress. Doctors are becoming more willing to accept that stress has an affect upon the body, and it’s now clear that it can even impact the look of your hair. Stress can exacerbate temporary thinning, particularly when it is related to a sudden trauma or continues over a long period of time. If you know you’re going through a stressful chapter in your life, you can help to protect your appearance by using Phyto Phytocyane Revitalizing Serum to promote healthy growth.

Although I have highlighted some of my favorite products from top brands like Phyto and Alterna, there are other hair care solutions that can help you beautify your hair. The most important thing to remember is that the products that you use on your hair do matter, so take your time and fully research formulas before using them. This will help to ensure that you get the beautiful results that you deserve and that you don’t waste money purchasing inferior products.

  • Gwyneth Paltrow- Glowing, Effervescent Mom and Star
An Oscar winning actress, entrepreneur and loving wife and mother to two children, Gwyneth Paltrow wears many hats, but seems to don each one perfectly. As the daughter of actress Blythe Danner and director Bruce Paltrow, Gwyneth had show business in her blood, but originally pursued a career as an anthropologist before she was bitten by the acting bug. In 1991, she made her film debut, appearing in a flashback as Wendy Darling in Steven Spielberg's film "Hook," and since then, she has appeared in more than 40 films.

With her effervescent personality, Gwyneth has an unmistakable charm in interviews, and over the years, she's shared many things about her life with the public. The more I learn about Gwyneth, the more things I discover about her outlook on life and her personal style that I admire, and I wanted to share a few of the biggest takeaways that have inspired me.

    1. Pursue your passions. Gwyneth has a number of interests that she has immersed herself in and shared with the world. Most recently, she published her own cookbook filled with recipes that she enjoys making for her own family.

    2. Make time for what matters. Cooking isn't the only thing that Gwyneth does for her husband, Chris Martin of Coldplay, and her kids, Apple and Moses. The family is frequently photographed on vacation and just enjoying one another's company near their home despite the demands of Gwyneth and Chris' schedules.

    3. Let your beauty shine through. Even when she's dressed to the nines to walk the red carpet, Gwyneth always appears fresh-faced and natural. She never crosses the line to look over-done and instead subtly accentuates her features, such as her beautiful blue eyes.

    4. Take risks. Some of Gwyneth's most acclaimed performances have been in roles that were risky. An example was her turn as Kelly Carter in the movie "Country Strong," a part that required Gwyneth to sing. Not only did she get rave reviews for her performance, but also a song from the film was nominated for multiple awards.

    5. Be who you are. In interviews, Gwyneth is open, honest and personable. She expresses her opinions courageously, and even when she misspeaks, she gracefully apologizes. Her self-confidence gives her a light all her own, and it's from this source of light inside of her that Gwyneth really glows.

If you can't get enough of Gwyneth, check her out in “Iron Man 3,” which is still playing in many cities.. You can also have a Gwyneth movie marathon at home the next time your summer plans get spoiled by the weather. My personal favorite film of hers is "The Royal Tenenbaums" followed closely by "The Talented Mr. Ripley." Which is yours? Let me know in the "Comments" section.

  • Sexuality and the Menopausal Woman
They don't call it "the change" for nothing. Menopause can mean different symptoms for every woman, but it almost always means changes in the body. These changes vary widely from differences in mood to even changes in sexuality. Many women are blindsided by the latter and are surprised to find that changes in their desire for, attitudes about and enjoyment of sex occur along with everything else.

The Impact of Menopause on Sexuality

Throughout a woman's reproductive years, her body releases hormones, which drive her menstrual cycles and help to regulate the body during pregnancy. When menopause occurs, the body's hormonal needs change greatly, and as a result, women often have lower levels of estrogen and other female hormones in their bodies. The effects of this decrease in hormonal levels are responsible for all of the symptoms of menopause, including those related to a woman's libido, sexual satisfaction and reproductive organs. In addition, the stress, fatigue and mood swings that are common during menopause can also affect a woman's sexual health.

    Sexual Health-Related Symptoms

The changes in hormonal levels during menopause can cause a variety of symptoms. Women may have just one symptom, no symptoms at all or many different symptoms. Some of the common to very common sexual challenges that menopause may pose are:

    - Marked decrease in libido

    - Vaginal dryness that makes intercourse uncomfortable or even painful

    - Difficult achieving orgasms or less intense orgasms

    - Problems becoming aroused even by foreplay that once was enjoyable

    Overcoming the Challenges

The good news for menopausal women is that many of the challenges that come with the change of life fade with time, and there are treatments available to help women cope with symptoms in the meantime. Using personal lubricants can help make sex more enjoyable for both partners when vaginal dryness is a concern. Oral hormone replacement therapy and vaginal estrogen creams can help a woman overcome most of the difficulties that menopause poses where sex is concerned. Counseling or sex therapy has been shown to help women deal with the mental and emotional symptoms that diminish sexual enjoyment.

Women in menopause who are concerned about changes in their sex lives and their reproductive organs should talk to their doctors to find out what types of treatments are available for their symptoms. It's also important to talk to spouses or partners about the changes; open communication can help prevent misunderstandings and resentment that can strain relationships.

  • Boho Chic – Tips for a Cool-vibe Hippie Look
Part retro, part modern, Boho Chic is one of the most fashionable looks for this spring and summer and draws inspiration from the hippie fashions of the 60s and the Bohemian styles of today. Relaxed, yet stylish, Boho Chic is a great style for the season, as the look is all about being comfortable while still feeling feminine and pretty. If you want to go Boho all summer long, you don't have to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe. Just follow these tips to get the look of the moment:

    - Maxi-mize your style. With its simple lines, the classic tank or strapless maxi dress is a Boho staple. Look for one with a retro floral design or one inspired by the patterns found on fabrics produced in Asian countries like India or Thailand.

    - Stitch things up. A hand-embroidered blouse makes a chic, retro statement. Look for one in a light cotton or gauze that is perfect for pulling on over a tank when hot summer days turn to cooler nights.

    - Bead it. The beaded look is Boho in a big way, and you'll find a wide array of beaded accessories in the collections of top designers this season. Try a large beaded statement necklace, dangling gypsy earrings or sandals with beaded accents. Feathers and fringe are also popular details for Boho accessories.

    - Loosen your locks. With Boho being all the rage, it's time to let your hair down. Hippie chic hair is meant to look a little mussed. Think loose braids and twists that are slightly askew.

    - Make waves. It's okay to let your hair down this season, too. Soft wavy hair is all the rage in the Boho scene. If you're not endowed with natural waves, trade your flat iron for your curling iron for the summer, or braid wet hair and let it dry naturally. When you remove the braid, you'll have perfect waves waiting.

    - Keep things fresh. Boho makeup looks are all about looking fresh-faced, yet sexy. Barely-there shadow paired with dark liner is a great look for the eyes. Try a foundation with a luminous finish or use a dewy blush to get the look for your face and try a lip stain or tinted gloss for a picture perfect pucker.

Remember that you don't need to go Boho from head to toe. It's fine to pair a Boho dress with your favorite pair of shoes and a stylish necklace or to give your favorite black dress a Boho makeover with your accessories. With some creativity, you can create many different looks using a few new Boho pieces and what you already have in your wardrobe.

  • Top 10 Father’s Day Gifts

Father’s Day is right around the corner, but there’s still time left to find a great gift for Dad. Shopping for men can be difficult, making many sons and daughters turn to impersonal gifts, such as neckties. If you want to get Father something that he could really use this year, consider men’s personal care products. Many men are every bit as concerned about their complexions as women, but often, they are less likely to buy products geared toward beauty for men.

  • Five Steps for Better Skin
They say that nobody is perfect, and the same could also be said about our complexions. Every woman can find flaws and imperfections on her own skin, even if they are imperceptible to those around them. Whether you’re concerned about frequent acne breakouts, dullness, enlarged pores, signs of aging, hypersensitivity or dryness, you can have better skin with the right daily regimen.

If you’re like many women, you may be unsure precisely how to use skin care products to improve the tone, texture and radiance of your skin. To help make things as easy as possible, I’ve put together this user-friendly five-step system to attaining better skin.

    1. Purify your complexion. Your skin simply can’t look its best if you don’t take the time to remove your makeup, excess oil, sweat and other impurities.  Depending on the formulas that you select, you may need to use a makeup remover followed by a cleanser; however, some cleansers like Philosophy Purity Made Simple contain ingredients that also dissolve makeup, allowing you to simplify your skin care routine. As you cleanse, move your fingers in a circular motion and then be sure to rinse your face completely. High quality cleansers, such as those made by Philosophy, will typically not be difficult to wash away.

    2. Rebalance your skin. The secret to preventing both excessive oil production and chronic dryness is keeping your skin at its ideal pH level. When the acid-base balance of your complexion is skewed, your sebaceous glands may over produce or under produce sebum, leading to symptoms like skin congestion, acne, peeling and flaking. Using a facial toner after you cleanse will help to correct your skin’s pH. Another option is to use a cleanser with a pH-adjusting toner built in, such as Philosophy Purity Made Simple. Multipurpose products like these can make a daily skin care regimen as easy as possible.

    3. Treat yourself. After your skin has been cleansed and primed with a toner, you’ll be ready to apply the face treatments necessary to address your skin care issues. For example, if you are concerned about fine lines around your mouth and loose skin along your jaw, you may opt for anti-aging skin care products like SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum. Alternatively, if acne blemishes are your worst skin care woes, you may apply a product designed to decrease sebum production, exfoliate the skin or shorten the healing time of blemishes.

    4. Deeply nourish. Once you have applied the lotions, serums or creams necessary to address your primary dermatological concerns, the next step is moisturizing. Some women mistakenly believe that only dry skin requires moisturization, but in actuality, even those prone to oiliness must replenish their skin’s moisture supply daily. Select a formula designed for your specific skin type to ensure the best results.

    5. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Follow the above four steps twice per day, every day. If you skip a step in your regimen because you slept in or were too tired in the evening, you run the risk of delaying results. Your complexion requires continual purifying and nourishing to be at its best, so it’s important that you stay diligent about your daily skin care routine.

Remember that the key to success with my five-step plan to improve skin health is to use products that are formulated for your skin care needs. While I have mentioned SkinMedica and Philosophy products here, you may find that another skin care brand has better face cleansers, treatments or other products for you. In some cases, you may even need to try a variety of products before you find the one that is capable of making a big difference in the look and feel of your complexion. Although you are sure to want to see results as quickly as possible, be patient. It will take time for signs of damage and imperfections to soften, but with regular daily care and top-quality products, they will most certainly improve with time.

  • Gel Manicures - Pros and Cons
You really can't underestimate the effect that the look of your fingernails has on your self-confidence. When you have a fresh manicure, you just plain feel better, and people truly do notice your hands more often than you think. For ladies who prefer to go to the salon for a polish, gel manicures are a popular choice, but lately, the negative aspects of gel manicures have gotten a lot of coverage in the press. So what really are the pros and cons of gel manicures? I did some research to find out.

    Pros

    - Gel manicures last an average of 2 to 4 weeks, much longer than a traditional manicure or acrylic tips. This makes them a favorite among busy women who don't have time for frequent trips to the salon.

    - After the gel polish is applied, it is dried with an intense light, preventing it from becoming ruined when you reach for your keys or put on your jacket to leave the salon.

    - The durable surface of a gel manicure is less likely to chip than standard nail polish.

    - Gel manicures look more realistic than acrylic nails.

    - In comparison to an acrylic manicure, gel manicures are much faster, as it takes less time for the gel to set up.

    - The gel manicure process produces no fumes, and the materials used to perform the manicures are usually nontoxic. This further sets gel manicures from acrylics.

    Cons

    - There is a risk of gel nail polish lifting off or peeling off, but this is usually caused by incorrect application techniques and can be avoided by choosing a highly trained and licensed manicurist.

    - Gel manicures typically cannot be removed at home. They are usually more tightly adhered to the nail bed than even acrylic nails tips are. Because gel manicures are difficult to remove, they can be inconvenient for women who like to change polishes quickly.

    - Before applying the gel, manicurists must drill or file down the nail bed. This causes some damage to the nails, but for most women, the nails recover over time if gel manicures are discontinued.

    - Concerns have been raised about the safety of the UV light used during gel manicures, as ultraviolet light in general is known to increase the risk of skin cancer and cause premature aging. An LED alternative is now available and is generally accepted as safer for the skin.

    - Gel manicures are more expensive than traditional polish manicures, and at most salons, they cost more than acrylic tips as well.

    - Cases of nerve damage due to poor or imitation gel solutions have been reported, but it seems that these are extremely rare. To protect yourself, be sure to only visit a reputable salon or spa for your manicure.

In the end, you'll need to balance your desire for an attractive, long-lasting manicure with the downsides of gel nails. If you choose to go for the gel tips, try to find a salon that uses LED lighting instead of UV. With the popularity of gel nails, more and more salons are beginning to offer UV-free manicures, so you're likely to be able to locate one somewhere in your area. This way, you can fully protect your health while getting that boost that only comes from having a gorgeous set of beautiful-looking nails.

  • CrossFit Madness – Motivation in Competition
There seem to be so many exercise programs out there today. If you're trying to decide which to choose to get fit, it can be difficult to know where to begin. I've been researching fitness programs lately to try and find the best of the best. Many programs have impressed me, but there was one I wanted to highlight because I'm hearing so much buzz about it these days--CrossFit.

    What Is CrossFit?

CrossFit is an exercise program that started in 2000, but it really seems to only have become mainstream in the last two or three years. The program was created by fitness expert Greg Glassman and has been used by fire departments, international military forces and sports teams as a part of their training.

While CrossFit itself is new, the exercises that it focuses on are anything but. The program incorporates tried and true equipment like kettlebells, medicine balls, free weights and ropes. The focus is on strengthening and using explosive movements to create change in the body.

    How It Works

CrossFit is offered at select gyms across the country. Typically, these gyms have CrossFit classes that last for about an hour and include a warm-up, a strengthening segment, a high intensity segment and then a cool down.

    Friendly Competition

During the high intensity segment or Workout of the Day, instructors monitor the performance of everyone in the class. At the conclusion of the course, participants are ranked in order of their performance.

Competition in CrossFit doesn't just occur within class. Annual CrossFit games are held during which CrossFit students from across the country compete in a series of events and receive medals for coming out on top.

    Benefits of CrossFit

CrossFit works the whole body and requires only a small number of repetitions to produce big results. For women, CrossFit increases overall body strength and slenderizes the core, where most of us are prone to putting on weight. Because so many of the moves are "old-fashioned," it's well documented that they are effective when done correctly.

The competitive aspect of CrossFit helps to increase motivation; when you know you're going to be given a rank at the end of a workout, you're less likely to phone it in and will get more from your workout. Also, moving up in the rankings provides a confidence boost and a sense of achievement that can improve self-image just as much as the exercises re-sculpt the body.

Like any exercise program, CrossFit is not for everyone. Before starting it or any other new fitness regimen, be sure to talk to your doctor. He or she can advise you as to whether or not your exercise routine is a good fit for your body's needs and clear you to safely begin working out.

  • Skin Care Alphabet Soup – Understanding Abbreviations
Sometimes, reading the list of ingredients contained in skin care products that you're researching can be a bit like looking down at a bowl of alphabet soup as you stir. Many common skin care ingredients are called by abbreviations, and when you're unsure of their meanings, they can easily blur together. To help you select the best skin care formulas for the needs of your skin, I put together this list of common skin care abbreviations that you can refer to as you shop.

AHAs - Alpha hydroxy acids or AHAs are natural acids derived primarily from the juices of fruits. When applied to the skin, AHAs dissolve the protein bonds that keep old skin cells in place on the complexion. As a result, AHAs are frequently used in exfoliators and in multipurpose products that exfoliate the skin. Examples of AHAs include glycolic acid, lactic acid and citric acid.

BB Cream - Beauty balm cream or BB cream is a relatively new type of makeup that has become incredibly popular. Most BB creams are multipurpose formulas with at least five actions. These include fighting signs of aging, hydrating the complexion, improving skin tone, smoothing the complexion and boosting the radiant, luminous look of the skin.

BHA - Beta hydroxy acid or BHA is another name for the skin care ingredient salicylic acid. This extract from willow bark has pore refining properties and acts as an exfoliator.

CC Cream - Color control cream or CC cream is the sister of BB Cream. These formulas provide all of the benefits of BB creams, but also contain richer cosmetic pigments, making them function like a foundation as well.

D&C - Drug and Cosmetic or D&C dyes are legal artificial colorants added to skin care products. Typically, the letters will be followed by a number, indicating the specific shade of the dye.

DHA - Dihydroxyacetone or DHA is an ingredient that can be obtained from sugar cane or sugar beets or manufactured in a lab. When DHA comes in contact with the skin, it causes the tissue to darken in color. This makes DHA a very common ingredient in sunless tanners.

DMAE - Dimethylaminoethanol or DMAE is found in many high-end anti-aging products. The ingredient has the ability to slow down or stop the contractions in the skin that cause it to furrow and wrinkle. When applied to areas that are plagued by signs of aging, DMAE can help to smooth the skin.

MAP - Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate or MAP is a nutrient derived from vitamin C that is often added to skin care products for its anti-aging abilities. MAP is generally more stable than pure vitamin C, though there has been some debate that it may be less effective than the vitamin in its raw state.

PABA - Para-aminobenzoic acid or PABA is an ingredient once commonly used to absorb ultraviolet light in sunscreen formulations. Many people are sensitive to PABA, so its use has largely been discontinued.

If you encounter other abbreviations, you can usually locate their meanings with a little online research. Taking a few extra moments to look up a term that is unfamiliar can help you ensure that you only use the best skin care products for your complexion.
