Colon Cleanses - Possible Dangers

Colon cleanses are becoming increasingly popular regardless of the medical community’s longtime stance that they are not particularly beneficial and may indeed be harmful. The alternative medical community on the other hand is quite pro colon cleanse. The latter’s rationale being that the procedure or treatment can actually remove toxins from the colon reversing the effects of autointoxication. However, neither ideal can be truly substantiated due to lack of studies on colon cleansings themselves.

Colon Cleansing
There are two methods. One involves oral consumption and/or product purchases of colon emptying treatments such as laxatives, enemas, herbal teas, oral preparations like Mag Citrate, and dietary supplements. The second involves a professional treatment known as Colonic Irrigation or Colon Cleanse from an actual practitioner at a hydro therapist’s office. The therapist inserts a tube into the rectum which is connected to a low pressure pump or a gravity based unit which flushes gallons of water (either plain or herb infused) into the large intestine to remove waste.

Traditional Medicine’s Theory
Those who feel that the treatments are not particularly beneficial or promote a healthier well-being say that the body itself does a fine job at removing wastes and that the colon is not a “dirty” place and can quite effectively do its job on its own as long as there is no pathology going on that could inhibit it. They feel that the colon sheds its own cells every three days which disputes the theory of “autointoxication.” They also feel that colonics could potentially be unsafe due to such upsets as bowel perforation, side effects such as vomiting, dehydration and cramping, and developing a dependence on laxatives and potential interference of mineral balance, natural flora and therapeutic medication and pharmaceuticals.

Alternative Medicine’s and Colon-Cleansing Professional’s Theory
This pro colonics community suggests that colon cleansing offers up many benefits. They feel stagnant waste can produce toxins which can enter the bloodstream through the delicate mucous membranes and subsequently poison the body. Autointoxication is said to cause a wide range of symptoms including headache, fatigue, low energy and weight gain; And that this general feeling of malaise can be eliminated once the putrefied waste has been completely expelled. In addition, this community feels that colon cleansings can reduce the risk of colon cancer, improve your mental outlook, boost the immune system and help one to lose weight.

My Experience
First of all let me say that most everyone would agree that anyone who is considering colon cleansing should definitely talk with their doctor about if it’s indeed right for them. There are a number of reasons which may make it contraindicated for many people. However, once you have the go ahead from your doctor as well as are properly informed on the procedure you may want to consider a colon cleansing. I have to say that for me, I found that I did indeed feel better. Actually make that a whole lot better! But I’ve always had problems with constipation and I may have been the perfect candidate. I found that my mental outlook did indeed improve and my headaches and fatigue were eliminated and so for me, it was an ideal treatment. The other reason it turned out to be a great thing for me is because it gave me the motivation to not allow my body to get into that stagnant state again. I started eating right and adding fiber to my diet. I also added exercise and try to remind myself daily to stay well hydrated. These small steps helped me to stay regulated and feel absolutely incredible!

If you’re interested in possibly undergoing colon cleansing my suggestion to you is to do it only if it’s right and safe for you. The internet has thousands of pages on the subjects and offer many credible sites where you can get tons of information such as the Mayo Clinic and hundreds of companies which offer products and treatments which also include many reviews.
