We all look forward to our summer vacations however; there are certain precautions we need to take to ensure summer fun as opposed to many possible summer disasters. We all want to come home happy and rested…not sunburned or even worse. Below are some summer vacation dos and don’ts.
Summer Sun
Keep you and your family safe from the harsh summer sun by following a few simple steps. Too much sun can result in serious burns, heat exhaustion and even heat stroke. First and foremost stay cool and hydrated and use sunscreen! Try to avoid stronger UV rays by staying out of the direct sun between the hours of 11am to 3 in the afternoon. Wear protective clothing such as cool shirts with long sleeves, hats, sunglasses (with proper UV lenses) and wear sunscreen and don’t forget to reapply often. And don’t be fooled by cloudy days because those rays are still shining through.
If you do get seriously sunburned see a doctor immediately and for typical sunburns try and keep the area cool by applying cool compresses or taking cool baths. You can also take an OTC pain reliever such as ibuprofen if there is pain. I apply Aloe Vera gel to the sunburned skin of my family on the few occasions that the sun caught us by surprise and I find that it works best for us. Also drink plenty of water because oftentimes with sunburn comes a headache and the headache is typically caused from dehydration. Additionally, if you develop blisters do not pop them or you’ll risk infection as well as slow down healing time.
Another problem with burns are the bottoms of your feet. It’s especially devastating when it’s a young child so be sure that you and your whole family are wearing shoes or sandals while at the beach or anywhere where the pavement or ground is hot. It’s easy to forget because oftentimes when you get there the sand hasn’t heated up yet…but by well before day’s end…it can become scorching.
Swimming and Boating
Always swim near a lifeguard and ask him or her about the conditions. Many times the ocean looks as calm as can be but underneath there may be life threatening rip currents. Always swim in groups or with someone else. Swimming alone is very dangerous because no one is there to get assistance. Be sure to avoid alcohol if you’re swimming or boating. The percentage of boating accidents where alcohol is involved is staggering.
Keep valuables in receptacles that float and remove jewelry before you leave the house or hotel. Many hotels offer safes to store your jewelry and other valuables.
Another casualty that people don’t usually think about is not too much heat…but too much cold. Hypothermia is a very real threat when swimming in cold ocean waters. And it’s extremely serious. Cold water reduces the body’s heat upwards of 30 times faster than air does. So in less than a quarter of an hour the temperature of both the heart and the brain can drop. If you do find yourself in the precarious predicament of being stranded in cold water, do not tread water to stay warm…instead float as motionless as you can and keep your head above water. Additionally, they say to assume a fetal position or get into a huddle with the others if you are in a group. Place the children in the middle so that they may obtain as much of your body heat as possible for assistance. If you find anything at all to float on try and climb on top of it and keep as much of your body out of the water as you possibly can.

Decor Use your neutral colored lounge furniture but decorate them with colored coordinated pillows depending on the occasion. For instance, big red, white and blue pillows look stunning on the Fourth of July.
Stores like Target, Big Lots and even the Dollar Store offer so many cute lawn and patio items and ornaments at a fraction of the cost of higher end stores like Crate and Barrel or Pottery Barn and oftentimes they are every bit as lovely.
Outdoor Food Roast some corn along with whatever you’re barbequing and place sticks of butter on decorated cake plates or cute butter dishes along with jars of sea salt and coarse black pepper grinders about the patio. Guests love to turn their yummy corn in the butter and salt and pepper just to their individual taste. Don’t forget to pick up plenty of corn dishes and holders before the event.

If kids are on the guest list set up a long row of easels with large poster boards along the grass so that they can each paint their very own murals. Get cute aprons for each child…along with a paint palette for each as well. They’ll have a ball!

Body jewelry is such a strange mix of a love-hate relationship for me. Colon cleanses are becoming increasingly popular regardless of the medical community’s longtime stance that they are not particularly beneficial and may indeed be harmful. My Experience

Getting a tattoo often seems like such a great idea at the outset, but it’s reported that upwards of 20% of the people who get one (or more) regret it later on in life. Today most people opt for laser removal or simply hide them on special occasions with camouflage and/or para-medical corrective makeup from companies such as Dermablend, CoverBlend and Cover FX.
If on the other hand you’re interested in getting a tattoo, you’ll certainly need to take precautions in terms of aftercare. If your tattoo artist covered it with a bandage keep it on for at least two hours before removing it…or as directed. However, if it is covered with plastic, it should be removed immediately. Next wash your new tattoo with antimicrobial soap and gently remove any blood, ointment or plasma. Then pat dry and apply a thin layer of new ointment, or as directed. It is generally agreed that you should not use Neosporin (due to a possible allergy), but A & D Ointment as well as Bacitracin are usually acceptable. Afterwards, continue to keep it clean and moisturized with fragrance-free lotion. Ask your artist for more information on general post-care and be sure to ask about post-care in terms of scabbing.
Fatigue can be a complication of many diseases and conditions; however, it also seems to be the most frequent symptom of menopause. It is estimated that a whopping 80% of menopausal women suffer from fatigue, whether it be caused simply by the symptom itself, or as an effect from other menopausal symptoms such as insomnia. Fatigue caused by menopause is most often caused from the hormonal imbalance going on within the body. Fatigue is different from drowsiness as it does not induce the desire to sleep…it simply decreases energy level. However, there are indeed treatment options available to help with this already frustrating time period, thank heavens!
Defining Fatigue
The definition of fatigue is simply an ongoing feeling of low energy, weakness and that of feeling tired. However, keep in mind that today we are discussing fatigue with relation to menopause. There are many other conditions that also cause fatigue such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome which is a much more serious and complicated condition and requires a better understanding than that of menopausal fatigue and may require different potential treatment options. So again, keep in mind that today we are examining possible treatment options for the common symptom as it relates to menopause.
Interestingly, fatigue can manifest itself in many different characteristics both mentally and physically. They can come and go or last all day long. The mental characteristics include decreased periods of wakefulness, apathy, irritability, lapse in memory, and decreased attention span. The physical aspects may include drowsiness, muscle weakness and increased drowsiness after eating.
Menopausal Fatigue Awareness
As stated above, this symptom can be distinguished by a variety of characteristics, both mental and physical. Oftentimes these symptoms can be experienced in tandem with each other. A woman undergoing menopause might feel a lag in energy levels that lasts all day, or experience shorter bursts of fatigue intermittently. These characteristics make the menopausal woman’s day extremely difficult and can actually decrease job performance and other critical daily tasks. That’s why it’s so important to discuss menopausal fatigue and hopefully educate women going through this difficult time of life and offer up some easy and valid treatment options.
What’s going on in My Body?
Besides the fact that hormonal imbalance promotes fatigue it also interrupts the critical sleep-wake cycle, which only exacerbates the fatigue. If you’re noticing an increase in insomnia during menopause it may be wise to get medical advice and treatment in order to get a good night’s sleep. This will at least help with one aspect of decreasing the frustrating symptoms of fatigue. Along with estrogen and progesterone levels decreasing, other hormones such as the thyroid and adrenal glands can be involved and can lead to the feeling of persistent fatigue. But again, keep in mind that those decreases may be due to other conditions in addition to menopause and may require additional care and treatment. In other words, it’s easy for us to blame everything on menopause instead of listening to our bodies which may be telling us that something else is wrong and requires medical attention. In fact, equally frustrating and conversely if you will, is how oftentimes the medical field jumps to a simple diagnosis of menopause as the cause of certain common symptoms when in fact, there may be something else more serious going on. So if your body is telling you something different than perhaps what you feel your doctor may be incorrectly assuming…then I think it quite prudent to get a second opinion.
Treatment Options
Start with options which are the least invasive and may help with a quick and safe remedy. Lifestyle changes can offer up some good relief simply by insuring a good night’s sleep, eating a better diet and by adding exercise to your day. These three easy steps will not only help with fatigue but will increase your quality of life on so many levels.
You may also want to explore a very effective approach when treating menopausal fatigue which is to treat the problem at its source. There are multitudes of natural and alternative treatment supplements available to support and address hormonal imbalance. Look into the possibility of correcting hormonal imbalance with natural dietary supplements…and if that doesn’t alleviate the symptom(s) you can always seek the advice of a medical doctor who may offer surgical or pharmaceutical options.
